CLUB HISTORY

In 1967 the city of Whyalla was booming with its’ population well above 30,000 people. BHP had a work force of over 4,000 employees, and each week 100’s of young lads lined up on Saturday mornings in the hope of getting a game of Aussie Rules football.
In 1968, Roopena Football Club was formed with 3 Junior teams entered into the Whyalla Football League Junior competition. Double Blue was chosen as the Club’s colours and the “Penny” Roo as our emblem.
In 1969, Roopena increased its’ Junior teams to four – U16, U14, U12 and U10’s.
On Sunday, April 26th 1970, Roopena still without a clubroom, entered the Whyalla Football League Senior competition, fielding its’ first ever A & B Grade teams.
In June 1971 the first stage of the Roopena clubrooms were built on the site that
the Club occupies today.

From 1971 to present today, the Clubrooms have undergone multiple extensions and changes to be the outstanding facility it is today.

The Club converted the then Member’s Bar into a Gaming room and commenced its’ Gaming operations on January 27th, 1995.

In the Club’s 50 years, the original Roopena Football Club, has become the Roopena Football & Sporting Club with the introduction of the sports of Cricket, Netball, Basketball, Darts and 8 Ball.

Our Kitchen staff prepare and sell counter meals at multiple times throughout the week, our Bar staff sell a range of beverages 7 days of the week, and the Clubrooms are used to facilitate meetings, social functions and multiple community uses, all under the supervision of our Club Manager.

The Roopena Football & Sporting Club promotes sport at all levels to the highest achievable standard while maintaining a Family friendly and welcoming club environment.

Our facilities accommodate the differing needs of our members and foster a sense of pride and belonging.

Our aim is to remain the most professional, popular and successful sporting club in Regional South Australia. We constantly work to improve the benefits provided to our growing membership.
