CLUB HISTORY
This growing interest led to the formation of the Central Whyalla Football Club in 1920, under the stewardship of the Hummock Hill Athletic Club, which took control of the sport as player numbers surged in the town. The club’s first official game was played on April 18, 1920, marking the beginning of a proud and enduring legacy in Whyalla’s sporting history.
One of the club’s founding members, Bert Zeven, played a pivotal role in shaping its early success, serving as the first club Captain and setting a high standard for leadership and dedication. Bert went on to coach between 1934 and 1937, and Chairman of the club in 1940. He was awarded the first ever Club Life Membership.
Over the decades, countless other great names have contributed to the club’s growth, helping to establish Central Whyalla as a cornerstone of the local football community. These early efforts laid the foundation for a club that continues to thrive, fostering a deep connection with its supporters and leaving an indelible mark on the region’s sporting culture.
