Women’s Footy
Girls have always played in the Junior boy competition in Whyalla, however, up to recently most female players have had to stop playing when they reach the age of 13.
In early 2022, Andrew Martin (Central Augusta) contacted Scott Leverington (South Whyalla), asking if Whyalla would consider fielding girls teams in the Port Augusta Junior Girls Competition. The Port Augusta Girls Competition had three clubs, South Augusta, West Augusta and Central Augusta, all fielding Under 11s, 14s and 17s female teams. Adding an extra club from Whyalla would eliminate the bye in the competition.
In early March 2022, South Whyalla Junior and Senior committees agreed to support fielding Under 14s and Under 17s teams in the 2022 Port Augusta Girls Competitions. Other Whyalla clubs were approached about also fielding teams, however, they weren’t keen on playing the majority of their matches in Port Augusta.
South Whyalla’s initial female football organizing committee comprised of Scott Leverington, Stephanie Grimes, Debbie O’Connor, Jason Gloyn, Kane Newsham and Gary Taylor.
The first South Whyalla Junior Girls training session was set for Thursday 14th April 2022, they didn’t know how many girls would turn up to that first training but turn up they did. By the end of the first season, 50 girls were playing across the two junior, South Whyalla teams.
Based on the success of the first foray in junior girl’s football. South Whyalla held an all Whyalla club’s forum on the 18th November 2022, proposing the creation of a Whyalla Senior Women’s Competition in 2023. The forum was attended by Port Adelaide AFLW Stars Hannah Ewings and Gemma Houghton.
A key strategy proposed for the new competition was that it be played between September and November, outside of Netball Season.
North Whyalla was the second club to come on board with a girls’ team. Port Augusta then offered to field a combined team in the competition, the prime movers for the Port Augusta team where their inaugural captain Kellie Von Snedden and vice-captain Maritiana Murray.
South Whyalla and North Whyalla held a trial game at Memorial oval, in mid-May 2024, the game was a sellout. Soon afterwards West Whyalla and Weeroona Bay nominated teams for the inaugural competition. Making a five-team competition.
North Whyalla also fielded Under 14s and 17s in the Port Augusta Girls Competition in 2023. Finishing a respectable 3rd in both competitions. South Whyalla won the Under 14s competition.
The inaugural Whyalla Football League Women’s competition kicked off on Friday the 12th September 2023 at Memorial Oval, a double header, first game North Whyalla vs South Whyalla, second game West Whyalla vs Weeroona Bay. North Whyalla and West Whyalla won convincing victories on the night. Memorial Oval was packed, with many people having to park their cars blocks away from the oval.
North Whyalla and Port Augusta played off in the first Whyalla Football League Women’s Grand Final. Port Augusta, with four seasons experience playing in the Crystral Brook Women’s Football Competition ended up being too strong, taking out the Premiership, defeating North by 21 points.
In 2024, Roopena Football Club entered U14s and U17s in the Port Augusta Girls Competition.
Finishing 3rd at the end of the minor round in both the U14s and U17s. North Whyalla’s U17s finished 2nd at the end of the minor round, however, were knocked out in the preliminary final.
No extra teams were added to the Senior Women’s Competition in 2024. Apart from the first round, played at Memorial Oval, all the remaining matches including the finals were played at Bennett Oval. The skill level improved across all clubs, with the gap between the leading and lower clubs closing, although for the most part the end results were the same. Port Augusta 3-4-22 defeated North Whyalla 1-6-12 in the Grand Final.
