Gregory Flanegan – North Whyalla

Greg started with North's Under 10's in 1966 and proceeded through all grades. Played in Whyalla SAPSASA sides in 1969 and 1970, and played an under 16 game for Central Districts in 1970.

Won the Under 18's Best and Fairest Medal in Whyalla in 1976.

Played senior football for North Whyalla in 1977 - 78 - 79 and the club won the premiership for those three years. Greg won his club's Best and fairest in 1979.

He was invited to train and played trials with West Torrens in 1977 - 79 and decided to stay in Whyalla because of work commitments.

During 1979 Greg was invited by Essendon to train and play in a trial and this resulted in a 3 year contract with that VFL Club.

Greg played majority of seconds games and towards the end of 1980 played two senior games. The first game being a win against Footscray and Greg was one of the few players to kick a goal with his first kick in League Football. The following week he played against Bruce Doull and Geoff Southby.

In 1981 Greg commenced well with a solid pre-season, however he received a bad injury four weeks into the season and was sidelined for 6 weeks, during this period he requested to return to Whyalla for Family reasons and after negotiating a release from Essendon finished the 1981 season with North Whyalla. A three year contract was signed with West Torrens for 1982 - 83 - 84 seasons and played 53 League games.

Greg was still keen to return to the country and purchased a business in Port Augusta in 1985, which resulted in him playing with South Augusta until 1989.

1990 - one season with Gladstone
1991 - one season with South Augusta
1992 - returned to Gladstone from where he retired.

Returned to Whyalla in 1993 and came out of retirement and played with his old club North Whyalla.

Greg now has a successful business in Whyalla and his son has won the Whyalla League Under 12 1/2's Medal in 2004 and to it looks like the Flanegan name will soon return to League ranks.
